Since Wonkwang University first commenced as Yuil - Hakrim (meaning: The unique school that stands at top), the university motto "Cultivation of both Knowledge and Morality, Practice of Moral Principle", based on the founding principle of Won Buddhism “With this Great Opening of Matter, Let there be a Great Opening of Spirit.” has helped nurture talented students with heart and soul for the past 60 years resulting in Wonkwang University to be Honam region's most noble university.
Everyone's answer to the question, " What did you learn at university?" was consistently the same. Almost everyone answered " I have learned very little". Nowadays, it is rare to find students who have spent the 4 years of their most youthful and joyful period of their life thinking it was worthwhile. They tend to think of their 4 years of university in skepticism or in vain. The role of the university is becoming more and more less important and the indifference to the functions of the university is expanding. A university diploma is meaningless since it cannot gurantee our future. All the dreams we had about our future when we first stepped into a university soon vanishes into thin air when we graduate and face the realistic cold-hearted society. But Wonkwang University is different.
Wonkwang University is to students 'where they want to attend to' and to the faculty 'where it is worth working for.' You will be reflecting the past 4 years with delight enjoying every second of it.
Everyone is saying that the role of the university has to change. It has been said so often that is now become a bitter fact. But Wonkwang University has already started to change. It is transforming into a school of expectation and desire. A school that is filled with competition, autonomy, flexibility and diversity - It is Wonkwang University. All the members of the faculty, including myself, will be striving after a bright and cheerful future for Wonkwang University, as if we too are students at this university. The famous philosopher Socrates said these words to a young man "Although your future is unknown, it will be abundant." Like the students in Wonkwang University, you will have infinite potential and your future will be full of promises. What you fill in the 'unknown' is up to you. To those who come to Wonkwang University that 'unknown' will be filled with a promising future and with all the things that will help make your dream come true. Try choosing Wonkwang University.
