College of Won - Buddhism

The goal of the College of Won - Buddhism, the core of Wonkwang University, is to foster a moral sensibility, which is essential in modern society. The College pursues two educational goals to foster moralities as well as knowledge and to practice moral principles. Both departments are training their students to become leaders that would spiritually guide people in the globalized and pluralistic modern society.

College of Humanities

The College of Humanities consists of five divisions(Humanities, Korean Language & Literature, English and Chinese Language & Literature, European Culture, and Arts) and twelve major concentration areas: Philosophy, History, Ancient Art History, Korean Language & Literature, Creative Writing, French Literature & Area Studies, German Literature & Area Studies, Music, Dance, and Traditional Korean Music. All the departments are staffed with dedicated faculty members who are devoted to teaching as well as research and scholarship. The College provides opportunities to explore various areas of liberal arts to become cultivated individuals equipped with broad vision, creativity, and qualities and personalities that they would need to succeed and to do business in various areas such as cultural content industry in the pluralized society.

College of Law

There are three departments in the College of Law: the Departments of Law, Police Administration, and Fire Service Administration. The Department of Law offers courses that give students legal knowledge and an increased capacity to learn. There is greater demand for legal intervention than ever before because the society as a whole is becoming more sophisticated ; therefore, the College aims to train it students to become capable legal experts that have sufficient knowledge to deal with law-related matters in life as well as in their legal practice.

College of Business and Economics

College of Business and Economics aims to train students to become well-informed and efficient economists and business managers who will lead the information society with their expertise and strong moral sense. It consists of the Division of Business Administration, Division of Economics, Division of International Trade, and the Division of Information and Electronic Commerce. A multi-major system is available for those students who want to major in more than one discipline. Thanks to an agreement between Wonkwang and Ludong University, students in the newly established Department of International Trade will study for 2 years at Wonkwang and then spend two years at Ludong, getting degrees from both colleges when they graduate.

College of Life Science and Natural Resources

The College of Life Science and Natural Resources offers courses that will help students acquire sufficient knowledge to conduct research, and practical skills so that they can be leaders in the field after they graduate. It has two divisions: the Division of Horticulture, Pet Animals and Plants Sciece, and the Division of Bio-Environmental Science. Students can major in Horticulture (Vegetables, Pomology, Horticultural Facilities, Flowers and Herbs, Flower Design, Horticultural Therapy), Pet Animals and Plants(Pet Animal Resources, Theory and Practice in Pet Training, Theory and Practice in Pet Cosmetics, Pet Entomology), Food and Environment(Food Processing, Traditional Fermented Food, Pedology, Environmentally-Safe Agricultural Chemicals), Environment and Landscape Archite-cture(Gardening and Tree Planting, Garden Design, Garden Management, Interior Gardening).

College of Pharmacy

Founded in 1966, the College of Pharmacy has graduated over 1,500 students. Its members conduct researches in pharmacy, one of the most important disciplines in bioscience, and train students to acquire in-depth knowledge and precise skills in pharmaceutical arts to cure diseases. The Department of Oriental Pharmacy was founded in 1996, the first of its kind in the nation. Students acquire expert knowledge to conduct research in their field. All students in the department have published articles in international scholarly journals listed in the SCI(Science Citation Index) for four consecutive years.

College of Education

Established in 1972, College of Education aims to train students to become capable teachers, help them to acquire a strong moral sense, and improve the quality of education in the nation. Students are strongly encouraged to prepare themselves for the government examination required for the basic teachers' certificate upon graduation.

College of Natural Sciences

College of Natural Sciences started as the Chemistry Department in the College of Arts and Sciences on December 24, 1969. It was separated from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1987 and now has 5 divisions with 42 professors and 1,700 students: Division of Mathematics and Informational Statistics, Division of Bio Nano Chemistry, Division of Microelectronics & Display Technology, Division of Biological Science, and Division of Sports Science(Majors in Sports Health Management, Social Sports, Security & Martial Arts). College of Natural Sciences not only trains students who will contribute to the development of theory but also those who will lead the high-tech, information society and prepare it for the increasing globalization of the world.

College of Human Environmental Sciences

The College of Human Environmental Sciences provides students with a high-quality education and facilities for the investigation of theories and practices to train them to be able to meet the demands of the future society and to contribute to the well-being of humanity, improvement of the quality of life, and preservation of the environment. It aims to train future-oriented experts that would contribute to improving the well-being of family and children, major components of society, and lead the development of such high value-added industries as fashion design, food and nutrition, coordination and makeup, and hair design.

College of Fine Arts

Our College of Fine Arts plays a pivotal duty in creating a new culture, by inheriting our traditional one and accepting the various modern ones. Accordingly all the professors of our College of Fine Arts put the educational purpose on cultivating the logic system and power of expression and elevating their qualities, and endeavour to contribute to the promotion of culture through education in order to fulfill its ultimate purpose, a realization of human-being? value. Our College of Fine Arts has two divisions, of which one is Fine Arts Division(Majors in Korean Drawing, Western Painting, Sculpture and Calligraphy) and another Craft·Design Division(Jewelry & Metal Arts, Majors in Ceramic Arts, Visual Communication Design and Industrial Design), and is becoming to encourage a zealous atmosphere of creation for an original place of art culture from Fine Arts to Applied ones.

College of Social Sciences

The goal of the College of Social Sciences is to educate students to study their subjects in depth and to become valuable members of society who will contribute to improving the quality of life and making the world a happy and culturally rich place. The college aims to make students experts with solid moral background and good social skills, for which it has improved the instruction of major subjects, broadened the choice of classes in arts and sciences, and tries to provide more opportunities for students and professors to talk to each other. Its faculty members are outstanding scholars with doctoral degrees from foreign and Korean universities, and each division has its own labs equipped with cutting-edge educational facilities to meet its special needs.

College of Engineering

Established in 1976, the College consists of four divisions: the Division of Electric and Electronic Engineering ; the Division of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering ; the Division of Urban, Civil & Environmental Engineering ; and, the Division ofArchitecture. There are a total of 4,621 students and 67 professors in the college. The recipient of the BK 21 and NURI funds from the government, College of Engineering aims to produce top-class engineers with creativity and expertise by providing students with ample opportunities to take a wide variety of courses in arts and sciences by combining departments into divisions and to pursue secondary and multiple majors in an excellent educational environment equipped with cutting-edge lab facilities.

College of Dentistry

The primary purpose of the College of Dentistry is to educate dental health care professionals with a well-rounded and morally sensitive personality. The ultimate goal of the College is to provide quality dental care to the public. The College is one of the leaders in the field and its graduates are experts that help patients prevent problems and recover, retain, and improve dental health. The College educates students in its clinical program to provide them with theoretical backgrounds and ample opportunities to observe and treat patients to make them skilled dental practitioners. Founded in 1978, the College of Dentistry offers Master's and Ph. D. degrees.

College of Oriental Medicine

The nation-wide renowned College of Oriental Medicine is a full department-level program of pre-medical courses that lead into the academic major within the Department of Oriental Medicine. The 4-year course load required by all pre-medical students includes: History of Oriental thought, Oriental Philosophy, Chinese Medical Studies, and Chinese Medical Language. During the first two years, Oriental medicine students are required to take courses in physiology, pathology, pharmacology, anatomy, immunology, preventive medicine, and medical phytology. Upon graduation, students are qualified to take the National License Examination for a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. With this license, they may operate their own clinic, work for a University Oriental Medical hospital, join the military medical officer corps, or serve as a public health officer. The WKU College of Oriental Medicine is nationally accredited and ranked top in its level.

School of Medical

The School of Medicine aims to train medical practitioners with sufficient knowledge and moral integrity to treat patients with the Hippocratic spirit. Students take general subjects and basic science courses in the two-year pre-med program. Then they go on to the fouryear medical program in which they attend a variety of clinical and scientific courses including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, histology, parasitology, immunology, preventive medicine, diagnostics, and other specialized subjects. The college consists of a multitude of labs and classes for theoretical and clinical research, and students undergo further training at Wonkwang University Hospitals in various locations across the nation.

Division of Police Administration

This special division was established in 1995, the first of its kind in Honam area, to meet the demand for a broader role of the police. It aims to train students to become leaders in the 21st century police system, and it is striving to become one of the best in the field by playing a leading role in making the police administration in the community more efficient and specialized.

 

Division of Fire Service Administration

There is a growing demand for fire service due to the improved standard of living and increased desire for safety. The division trains students to become fire service experts equipped with a well-rounded personality and knowledge of the field to meet such demand.

 

Division of Military Science & Art

The division aims to train future-oriented professional officers of the 21th century by imbuing them with leadership qualities including autonomy and self-discipline. All students receive 4-year scholarship and could stay in campus dormitories by own choice.
